Team Leader Apprenticeship Programme
The Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor qualification is aimed at those taking on their first, line management role. Over 18 months, learners will understand how to combine responsibility for delivering projects and operational plans, with making the transition to formally managing and developing team members. The Team Leader/Supervisor is able to communicate expectations and identify standards of performance to meet strategic organisational goals.
Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical work-based learning, participants will develop key skills including:
- Interpersonal excellence: leading people, managing people, building relationships, communication
- Organisational performance: operational management, project management, finance, delivering results
- Personal Effectiveness: awareness of self, management of self, decision making
At a task level, the focus is on how to contribute to strategic planning in line with organisational objectives by implementing operational plans and managing resources including setting and monitoring key performance indicators.
At a team level, the focus is on how the team completes their jobs as effectively as possible, what the team does successfully and the skills and responsibilities that the team could develop. This includes knowing how to achieve through others, make other people more successful, and help others strengthen their skills and talents in a way that consistently builds teams and grows organisations.
Taking on management responsibility can be daunting. It feels awkward and the temptation is to revert to a comfort zone of operational delivery. With the support of a designated course tutor throughout, the Team Leader/Supervisor programme will help participants to support and develop individual team members and motivate them to achieve by setting goals and recognising achievements. They will be able to ensure that roles and responsibilities are clear and contribute to both the job satisfaction of individuals and the delivery of overall team objectives. This also includes addressing the more challenging issues of delegation, managing underperformance, managing conflict, and giving feedback.
Assessment is based on coursework and projects directly related to a learner's own role, and a course mentor will guide learners through the programme with monthly progress reviews and hints and tips for success.
On completion, apprentices can register as Associate members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, to support their professional career development and progression.
